Discovery of presence of water in the planet moon is not novel

The former chairman of ‘ISRO’, Padmabhooshan G. Madhavan Nair, in a recent interview has observed that this is the first time, the world of Science has discovered that there is water in the planet moon. This observation was made by him when he was speaking about the launching of Chandrayan-1. On the basis of information gathered so far by the Scientific community he observes that the presence of water cannot be there normally in places where there is so much of high temperature and vacuum. He has further observed that the finding of the quantity of water in hydrated form in the moon is only in a small scale.

But according to ‘NASSA’, when they conducted an ‘impact-probe’, after two months of the launching of Chandrayan, their finding is that ice-blocks are there in a large scale itself and the water from  ice would be sufficient for the use there.

In spite of the great progress of modern science, it is only now, such information has been gathered by our scientists as well as international scientific community. But the great and revered sages of India, with their divine insight have revealed, long years back, in their scientific treatises and other works that ice-blocks and plenty of water are there is the planet moon.

At the outset we can examine the Pārame’swary Commentary of Amarako’sa, the comprehensive Sanskrit dictionary compiled by the great Amarasimha.

“Himām’su’schandramā’schandra Induhkumudabāndhavah
Vidhuh, Sudhām’suh Subhrām’suroshadhee’so Ni’sāpathih
Abjo Jyvāthrikāssomo Glowrmrigāngah Kalānidhih
Dwijarāja’sa’sadharo Nakshathre’sah Kshapākarah”

We can scrutinise a few from the twenty synonyms of the moon stated in the above stanza.

Himām’su       -  one having mist - like cold rays.
Indu                -  one who emanates the moon-light with the misty rays.
Abja                -  water-borne
Sudhām’su    -  Nectar-rayed

These synonyms indicate that the planet moon is ever associated with water.

The great scholar of Kerala Sri. Kaikulangara Rama Varier in his commentary on Varahamihira’s Hora, the basic astrological treatise, mentions from the Gārgivākyam (Observation of the revered sage GĀRGI) as follows:

“Chathurthe Karkato Meeno Makarārdham Cha pa’schimam
Bhavanthi Balino Nithyamethe hi Jalarā’sayah. (1-17)”

If Karkitakam, Meenam and the latter half of Makaram are in the fourth position they would be strong and these rā’sis are Jalarā’sis. Karkitakam is the house of moon. In the Horasastra, “Seethara’smi” (cold-rayed) is stated as synonym for the moon. (2-2)

In a further context in the Horā’sāsthra itself the association of moon and water is mentioned in the following lines.

“Vahniambwagnija Kesavendra’sachikāh
Sooryādināthāh Kramāt (2-5)”

We can examine and think about the various aspects of Agni, (Fire-God), Water-God Lord Subramanya (the leader of the army of Devas) Lord Vishnu, the Protector, Indra, the chief of Devas, ’Sachi (wife of Indra) and Brahma, the creator, by the respective positions of Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. It could be observed from the stanza, the close relationship between the moon and water.

In the ‘Skanda Hora’ the aspects of Karkataka Rā’si is stated as below:

“Arunā Brahmanīrā’sisthureeyo Rā’simandale
Jale charathi Santhaptha Varunam Sthouthi soonrithaih”.

Among the twelve houses the fourth house Karkitakam (The Home of Moon) will bear red colour, brahminical temperament, mobility in water, high temperature and invocation of Varuna, the water God.

In another commentary of the HORA known as “Da’sādhyāyi”, it is mentioned as below in the explanation of one of the stanzas –

“Prakā’sasūnye Jalamaye Chandramasi Ravira’smisampāthāt Saprakā’sam Chandra ’Sareeram Utpadyathe ithi Yukthyā Siddhyathi”

The Moon devoid of brightness and in the midst of water, when having the contact of Sun’s rays attains brightness.

In another astrological work known as “Pra’snamārga” the nature of Karkitaka Rā’si is described as below:

“Devānganā vāsathatāka ramyam
Jalānthikam karkatakasya rā’she (15-123)”

The position of Karkitaka Rā’si is the bank of beautiful lake, the appropriate abode of celestial damsels.

         It is told in Samhitha:-

“Salilamaye ’Sa’sini Raverdeedhithayo Mūrchithasthamo nai’sam Kshapayathi”.

“The Sun’s rays falling in the moon, in the midst of the water dispel the darkness at night”.

It could be easily observed from all the stanzas quoted above that the association of water with the moon is crystal-clear, long ago.

Modern Scientists, with all the amenities at their command, try to discover the various objectives and truths of nature. In this context it would be very interesting and educative to examine and study the great Scientific treatises and other works, of our divine and revered Sages, in which they have stated in a very clear manner the various truths we are trying to find out at present –

Delving deep into the rich treasures in Sanskrit language of our ancient Holy Bhāratha Varsha, would certainly be a rewarding experience contributing to the rapid advancement of Science.
